KIRCHHOFF Automotive develops and produces complex metal and hybrid structures for body-in-white and chassis that are lightweight, economical and crash-proof. Today, many automotive manufacturers have complex structural parts for the body-in-white in hybrid design – combinations of steel-aluminum or metal-plastic – developed by KIRCHHOFF Automotive and manufactured worldwide.

We offer solutions that make tomorrow's mobility safe! Our global production network includes the core technologies of forming, joining, lightweight design, and surface treatment, ensuring uniform standards around the world.

Our customers can take advantage of our expertise in automotive lightweight design. We develop structural parts in hybrid designs – combinations of steel and aluminum – or metal and plastic. For example, we will be showing new concepts for battery housings in electric vehicles, in which we have been able to reconcile high process reliability, lightweight construction and economy.

Hybrid front-end in profile and shell design (steel & aluminum)

Key features: Hybrid front-end for BMW X5-X7 made of steel (SO-frame only for US models) and aluminum. Technologies: forming of aluminum coil material, processing of aluminum extrusions, heat treatment, aluminum WIG-welding, assembly and integration of different fasteners, e-coating.

Battery Housing for E-Mobility

Based on our many years of experience in the development of crash-proof structures, we developed and presented an innovative battery housing for e-mobility two years ago.

This year, too, we show how our technology carriers can harmonize high process reliability, lightweight construction and cost-effectiveness. These are the development focal points:

  • Economical aluminum and aluminum-steel hybrid solutions

  • Integrated crash safety and underbody protection

  • Scalability for application in various vehicle versions and derivates

  • Tightness concept: built tank / folded tank

  • Joining technologies and leak tightness requirements: Thermal joining processes, mechanic joining processes, glueing

  • Narrow flatness tolerances

Frontend structure for the MPDB (Mobile Progressive Deformable Barrier) Frontal Crashtest

With this Crash Management System, KIRCHHOFF Automotive has further developed one of its core products in order to meet the requirements of passive safety according to the Euro NCAP guidelines with the new MPDB test. In the event of a crash, the energy input is distributed and absorbed over a large area.

In this way, all those involved in a crash are to be protected. If a large, heavy vehicle collides with a small, light vehicle, the risks for the occupants of the latter are often many times higher.

The reason for this lies in the structures that are often not tuned to each other, so that the smaller vehicle usually absorbs a larger proportion of the energy.

The CMS, specially developed for the MPDB test, acts like a protective shield and focuses not only on the safety of the person responsible for the accident but also on the safety of the other party involved in the accident.

Aluminum Front Axle Support in Shell Design

With the increasing demand for lightweight construction, the vehicle bodies of current vehicle generations and in particular their assembly components contain all-time high proportions of aluminum.

In addition to the classic steel design, mixed construction methods out of aluminum, such as combinations of casted structures, extruded profiles and sheet metal, are also increasingly being used for subframe structure parts.

With the weight-optimized subframe in shell metal design KIRCHHOFF Automotive developed an economical lightweight solution for serial production.
